In 1690, Orthodox Jews (primarily from Poland) began settling in Subcarpathia. By 1939, the Jewish community of Munkács made up half of the town’s population and maintained a vibrant life.
It drastically changed with the introduction of discriminatory laws, ghettoization. After World War II, the remaining and diminished Jewish population of Subcarpathia faced even greater hardship due to the intensifying antisemitism.
